Why HEX?
It's really about mathematics. A hexagon is the shape that best fills a plane with equal size units and leaves no wasted space. Hexagons also minimize the perimeter for a given area because of their 120-degree angles. With hexagons, the pull of surface tension in each direction is the most mechanically stable, which is why even though bees make their honeycombs with circular units, the end result when the wax hardens into place is hexagonal.
Bee hives are of course the common example, but definitely not the only one. Basalt columns and insect eyes also form hexagonal patterns. We’ve learnt a lot from nature and implemented that knowledge and ingenuity into our designs.
